Gelcoat Repair
Project
Sailboat at Safe Harbor Charleston City Marina had minor cosmetic damage.
Work Performed
We removed the loose fiberglass and gelcoat and then built up the damaged area using fiberglass with a filler. It takes a couple of coats to get it filled and shaped correctly. Prime, sand then paint, wet sand and buff.
The trick is to order the paint early in the project because sometimes it can take a while. For those of you who don’t know, on most boats there’s a small hull ID number on the upper starboard corner of the transom. Use that number to order your paint from the boat manufacturer or a marine paint vendor.
Results
For an older boat the color match is excellent. These are not the kind of projects that can be rushed and usually span a couple weeks with multiple visits. Next up is to sand flat, paint, then wet sand and buff to a shine. Almost done, and we’ll include a final picture when wer’e finished.
