1987 Tartan 28′ Deep Cleaning
Project
Boat had been sitting for a couple years during Covid and the owner wanted to start using her again.
Work Performed
We started off with an aggressive wash using strong detergent and a medium bristle brush to remove the caked-on dirt and lichen. We then treated the mold and mildew with a bleaching agent and scrubbed her again.
All the exterior teak had growth, so we scrubbed that harder than we normally would. We followed that up with a light sanding in some places like the companionway hatch boards. We then finished off the teak with a light treatment of acid to restore some of the original color. A few of the wooden bungs had eroded and were leaking water inside the boat. We removed the screws, countersunk the holes, bedded the screws with adhesive caulk and installed new bungs.
Results
The boat exterior is clean and ready to use. The interior is leak free and the owner is already sailing the Tartan. The next step is an interior deep cleaning. We also plan to install a louver vent in the companionway door to promote better air flow and avoid mildew down below.
